ORIGINAL HEADQUARTERS, KOMODO
NATIONAL PARK, INDONESIA
As part of a 6 year national parks and
tourism project of UN FAO and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), from 1979-82 I
advised Indonesias protected area authorities on establishing their first
national parks in Java, Bali, and Komodo. Leading a unit headquartered in Bali,
we traveled throughout the Lesser Sunda Islands assessing potential for
improved conservation and coordinating development of local and regional nature
tourism. We designed and led the field trip program of the Third International
Congress on National Parks in Bali, 1982, introducing these national parks and
providing a model for future ecotourism itineraries. In a second assignment, in
1990 for WWF-US, I led traveling seminars for mid-level managers, helped
prepare for major international funding projects and assisted in World Heritage
nominations.
In a
three year relationship with WWF Indochina Programme, I first advised the
Cambodian Department of Environment on park planning and conservation of
endangered species in protected areas from the coast to inland forests.
